We came across an interesting new press release concerning digital photo frames from an market research firm named In-Stat, which has some interesting information regarding consumer preferences. The study by In-Stat, which surveyed over 1500 responds, highlights key preferences from consumer, some of who do and some who don't currently own digital frames. These preferences specifically included video capability, wi-fi, and internet connectivity for digital picture frames.
Does this surprise anyone? Hardly. Just as digital cameras have slowly added video capability, the digital photo display devices have adapted to support this type of content. Naturally digital photo frames, including those from Smartparts, Kodak, and Portable USA, support display of video images along with pictures.
Wi-Fi is becoming more important for digital frames because customers want to take full advantage of the dynamic nature of digital frames over static picture frames. Transferring fresh images from a PC or MAC (usually from a picture management application like Flickr) to your digital frame is made even easier when Wi-Fi is supported, like with the Kodak EASYSHARE W820.
Internet connectivity for digital frames is something we are monitoring closely at with DSF.com. Since most digital frames aren't positioned to be easily connected to the internet via a wired connection, this is best done via a wireless internet connection. This requires additional hardware and processing power on the frame, which raises the cost, but will eventually become a standard feature.
Another interesting point from the In-Stat article was that Kodak digital frames were the brands most owned by respondents.
