Litigation Around Wireless Digital Frame Services Sorting Out

framechannel logo1 Litigation Around Wireless Digital Frame Services Sorting OutAs we've written many times on this blog, the future of digital picture frames is in wirelss technology. What makes digital frames so innovative is that you can constantly display fresh pictures, something impossible on a traditional frame, and wireless technology makes this even more possible. Wireless digital frames are also evolving into more than just picture frames, many now stream other types of media like news, weather, and anything else that can be sent via an RSS feed.

Ceiva was an early experimenter in providing a network sharing service with their digital frames, allowing a remote family member to send pictures to a digital frame. Recently, a company called Frame Media has developed a similar free service called "framechannel" that digital picture frames like Kodak can use to feed content to a frame using wireless technology. Last year Ceiva sued Frame Media for patent infringement claiming Frame Media had infringed on Ceiva's patent for distributing picture mail.

This week, Frame Media seemed to get some good neews in its favor.

Smartparts Entering the Wireless Digital Picture Frame Market with SPX8WF

smartparts spx8wf2 Smartparts Entering the Wireless Digital Picture Frame Market with SPX8WFThe Smartparts SPX8 digital frame is one of the most popular sellers at DSF.com, and Smartparts has done well with most of its SyncPix line including the SPX8. However this frame should not be confused with the more recently released Smartparts SPX8WF wireless digital frame. Smartparts like other digital frame manufacturers is seeing the future of digital display frames and moving into the wireless category.

While researching this frame, and looking for enough solid reviews to add it to our offerings at DSF.com, we found some pretty good ones including a recent review over at PC World.

Mac Users are Digital Frame Lovers Too

maclife logo1 Mac Users are Digital Frame Lovers TooMany people have asked me if Apple makes or plans to release digital picture frames. The answer (to my knowledge) is that they don't, though often times consumer electronics get outsourced by one company to another and released under another brand. But it looks as though Apple has stayed out of the digital frame market so far.

However that doesn't mean that Apple Mac users can't take advantage of great digital frames from other manufacturers. A Mac generally stores and manages pictures in the same formats as PCs, and can support the same memory devices that transfer photos to digital frames. Plus, if you are a Mac user or have used a Mac, you know that it has superior media editing applications as part of its iLife suite. Photo editing, slideshow creation, adding of music to slideshows, and many other multi-media creations are a breeze with a Mac.

Digital Photo Frame for Dad: One More Week Until Father's Day

Portable_USA_pu-12wb_digital_frameA few weeks ago we blogged about all the reasons to consider a digital frame for Mom on Mother's Day, so with Father's Day around the corner, its appropriate we do the same for Dads. Fathers probably get stuck with more useless gifts than Mom's anyway, so fight that urge to buy him cologne or another neck tie and get him a cool new gadget he can use. Many of the reasons for buying Mom a digital picture frame are true for Dad, but Father's likely have some reasons of their own.

This post also recommends some specific digital frames that will make Dad happy on Father's Day.

Kodak Theatre HD Player is the Mother of all Digital Frames

kodak theatre hd 150x150 Kodak Theatre HD Player is the Mother of all Digital FramesKodak is heavy into promotion of its latest media sharing wonder, the Kodak Theatre HD Player, with many reviews being published in consumer electronic circles. In a nutshell, this is a HD device designed to get digital media (mainly pictures) from your data sources on to your TV quickly and impressively. At DSF/Blog, we see it as the further evolution of products that make it easier for consumer to get pictures out of their computers and memory devices and into their homes (in this case, on their TV).

You can read a pretty good review of the product here at Wired (Kodak's Little Black Box Spreads Media-Streaming Love). If you are a fan of showing off your digital pictures around your house, digital picture frames are surely one option and great devices that are becoming more capable and feature reach all the time. However you likely have another very high priced digital display in your home (probably more than one) and that's your HDTV. Showing off pictures and slideshows on your big HDTV in the basement over the Thanksgiving Holidays can be loads of fun.

Getting those pictures on displayed on your TV however, has traditionally been somewhat challenging. You could

  • hook up your digital camera directly to your TV (limiting slideshow and other controls to what your camera could do)
  • drag your computer and connect it to your TV (very clunky and impossible without a laptop)
  • burn your pictures to a DVD and play them on your DVD player (tedious transfer process)

Devices like the Kodak Theatre HD Player eliminate all these obstacles by connecting wirelessly to your laptop, automatically transfer pictures, connect permanently to your TV, and give you a decent (and sure to improve) user interface to control picture display and slideshows on your TV. The Kodak Theatre HD comes with a ergonomic remote for these purposes.

So, Kodak digital picture frames can still be an important part of the answer in showing off your great digital photography in your home. But when the family is together, and its showtime, you might consider a Kodak Theatre HD Player!
