Digital photo frames are appealing to many, but those that don't own one likely have lots of digital pictures, they just keep them on their PC. One of the constraining factors of any digital picture frame is the transfer process of getting pictures from your computer to the frame. That's why wireless technology is so appealing when integrated with digital picture frames, as it greatly simplifies the transfer process.
Kodak has released several wireless digital picture frames, including the Kodak W1020 10-inch Digital Photo Frame, which is now available from our digital picture frame specialty store DigitalSmartFrames.com. This post has a rundown of the features and performance of the Kodak W1020 digital frame.
Digital Frame Features
The Kodak W1020 has a white frame and a 10.2 inch display LDC screen and like the W820 the display quality is great. Screen resolution is 800x480 which is fairly typical for a 10" screen, and pictures display beautifully. Also like the W820, the W1020 comes with the 'Home Decor Kit', giving you 2 additional mattes so you can give your frame a red or silver border depending on the style you are looking for. Of course the frame works great on table top as it has a swivel kickstand for mounting either horizontal or vertical.
Look on the back of the frame and you find ports for various types of memory, including a 6 in 1 slot for USB, SD/SDHC, MMC, xD, MEMORY STICK, COMPACTFLASH. Virtually any type of memory device you have in a camera or PC can work with this frame, or you can use the USB connector to transfer straight from you PC. Another nice feature is the 512 MB of internal memory, so you can store a whole bunch of picture (up to 4000 depending on image quality) directly on the frame itself. Kodak is great about including internal memory on its digital frames and it comes in handy if you use it frequently.
Remember, digital frames can be used for more than pictures, and the Kodak EASYSHARE W1020 is compatable with video and audio media. Video formats supported include MPEG 1 and 4, AVI, MOV, as well as MP3 audio, so whether you want to play video clips from your camera or slide shows with sound, you can do it with this frame. Internal speakers exist on the back of the frame for sound.
Quick Touch Border Controls
Operating a Kodak frame is somewhat unique, and the W1020 is no different in that it uses the EASYSHARE 'Quick Touch Border' control system. This is essences a menu system driven by lights and commands on the LCD screen that you drive using the border around the frame. Thus there are no buttons and a 'touch screen' type feel, but you fingers stay off the key aspect of the device (the LCD screen).
Through this system you set up the many standard features of the frame, including slideshow options, transitions, picture modes, and auto on off. Getting your pictures to display really doesn't take much effort, once you insert you memory card, the frame virtually starts displaying in basic mode right away.
Wireless Capabilities
As mentioned, what sets this frame apart from many others are the Wi-Fi capabilities. By installing the Kodak EASYSHARE software on your PC, and syncing you frame to your PC through security keys, picture transfer then becomes totally wireless. Once again, since the frame has internal memory, picture transfer, storage and display all become quite simple.
Once the Wi-Fi connection is establish, you have more options as to where you frames gets pictures. For example, you can synchronize with your Flickr account, Photobucket, Picasa, or other picture management sites. This allows you to keep fresh pictures on your frame from wherever you normally manager you pictures, which really is what digital picture frames are all about.
The wireless capabilities of the Kodak W1020 also let you take advantage of additional streaming media such as news and weather, primarily through the FRAMECHANNEL service. This RSS type media delivery turns your frame into an information portal in addition to being just a digital frame.
