Folks from The UK are so in tune with their senses that they can recall the smell connected with a scene or location just by looking at a photograph of it. That's according to research released by a major camera manufacturer to mark the launch of its most recent compact digital cameras, which they claim capture memories in more vivid detail than ever seen.
The study, which was conducted across twenty-three nations, revealed that 47% of Brit folk surveyed can remember the scent associated with an image, and many said they would actively take an image of something based only on the way that it smells. The results also show that Brit girls are likely to pay attention to the perfume of their surroundings when taking a picture than men, with over a quarter saying they would capture a picture of something that smells appealing for example a rose garden. This research is very important for people who are looking for new Canon digital cameras.
Commenting on the analysis, Dr Raquel Heinz, a leading world expert in the psychological science of smell and a lecturer at a major school, announced : This studies show just how potent the link between our memories and the sense of smell really is. While a photograph can visually remind us of a specific point in time, if it is accompanied by scent it'll arouse even more emotional and evocative memories more than any other memory trigger.
When asked to rate a list of smells that were most inclined to trigger a memory, over 53% of europeans surveyed named the smell of freshly cut grass as their top Memory smell, with the scent of sunscreen and baby talc coming in at 2nd and 3rd.
Talking about the results, Dr Heinz said: "For many years scientists have conducted research into the link between our senses and our ability to recall memories. My research shows that our sense of smell particularly has a uniquely intimate and direct connection with the area of the brain that controls emotional memory. It isn't surprising that so many folk selected freshly cut grass and sun lotion as their top memory smells, as these aromas are strongly linked with youth - the time when our first scent memories are being formed. For most scents linked with childhood such as the scent of a hot summers day in the fairground have a particularly powerful ability to trigger an emotional memory that takes them back to their youth."
A representative for a major digicam manufacturer comments: "While a picture is the ultimate way to capture and document lifes most precious memories, we wanted to try something a little different and see whether there had been another factor involved in recalling a certain point." The company has been exploring every angle that people pursue when wanting for buy a new Sony digital camera.
This research into the scents associated with memories shows that not only do British folks have a wonderful ability to remember certain scenes and locations based primarily on scents and smells, the majority also make a conscious effort to maximize the power of these memories for themselves.
Compact digicams can help to capture memories better than ever before, and though they do not quite capture smell just yet, they actually can rouse the memory of it! So when you are looking for new Nikon digital cameras keep your eyes, and nose, open wide.
